The Best of Both Worlds

Any of you who have read my blog for more than the past couple posts have probably come to the conclusion that I like to workout, and I like breakfast, specifically smoothies, and coffee. When I stumbled upon this lovely recipe, from Fit For A Bride, I KNEW I had to try it.

I’m awesome at stealing other peoples ideas and incorporating them into my own life. But I always want to give credit where credit is due, so please check out this blog, where I got the idea/recipe, and give her some love! She definitely did all the leg work, and her recipe is so perfect I didn’t change a thing!

“The Perfect Coffee Protein Shake”

  • CoffeScreen Shot 2014-10-02 at 12.24.59 PMe – 1 cup.Sara recommends making a cup the night before and sticking it in the fridge. I like this idea.
  • Protein Powder – 1 scoop
    • Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk (don’t get unsweetend plain, the vanilla is crucial)
    • Unsweetened Cocoa – use this if you use vanilla protein powder, which is what I usually have around. Otherwise, if you use chocolate protein powder, you can skip this step.
    • A Frozen Banana – I peel it, chop it up, stick it in a ziploc bag and freeze it overnight.

I love my nutribullet, because I can blend this all together, and then run out the door. No extra dishes, no pouring into a different container.Screen Shot 2014-10-02 at 12.24.00 PM

My Favorite Smoothie Recipes

Busy, rushed mornings. Lack of quick, nutritional foods. These are the reasons why I’ve been scouring the internet for quick, easy, and healthy breakfast ideas. What I’ve found most often are recipes for overnight oats, and smoothies. I love both of these things, and thought I’d share with all of you some of my favorite smoothie recipes. What I love most about a lot of these, is you can prep ahead of time (making multiple “sets” of ingredients, freezing them, and grabbing quickly), and mass produce.

The blender I use:

Nutri Bullet NBR-12 12-Piece High-Speed Blender/Mixer System

I LOVE this blender. It was a little pricy, but in my opinion it’s totally worth it. Quick review: it blends EVERYTHING. And well. It also comes with multiple cups to blend in – 1 large and 2 small. I typically blend in the large cup and then pour it into my blender bottle to take to work with me. The cups come with lids and rings to drink from them directly, but I prefer my blender bottle so I can rinse the blender cup out right away for the next day.

Anyways, regardless of what blender you use, here are my top smoothie recipes.

Food Babe’s Pineapple Grapefruit Smoothie

This green smoothie is delicious. It uses Kale, which is a green veggie packed with nutrients that is easily masked in flavor by fruit. It combines grapefruit and pineapple (which some people can’t have), which are even better at masking kale than other flavors.

Sometimes I will substitute the plain water with coconut water for some extra electrolytes, and sometimes I’ll also add a scoop of protein powder or vanilla greek yogurt for protein if I’m using it as a meal replacement.

(I also love to put a little fresh ginger in there to help my digestive system)

My “less than healthy” option:

  • 1 scoop vanilla protein
  • 1 Tbs. cheesecake flavored pudding mix (sugar free)
  • 1 Tbs. Nutella
  • 1 banana
  • 1 1/2 cups almond milk
  • 1 cup ice

This recipe makes enough for M and I to have a treat, if i’m trying to be healthy and trying to convince him to eat this instead of ice cream…

¾ cup puréed pumpkin (from a can is what I do)
1 cup unsweetened almond milk
A few drops of stevia, or some honey (optional)
1 teaspoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon nutmeg
2 tablespoons ground chia seeds (or flax)
¼ teaspoon grated fresh ginger
¼ teaspoon vanilla extract

I love fall. And I love Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Lattes. But my bank account doesn’t. This smoothie gives me the flavor, but is much cheaper.

And then ANY of these smoothies. The link on Pinterest only goes to a green smoothie recipe, so sorry I can’t share anything bigger than this picture:

Bluth Bites – Frozen Chocolate Covered Banana Bites

Tonight I was craving something sweet and chocolately, and after a quick pinterest search I found these: bluth bites.jpg

“Bluth Bites.”

I’m a huge fan of the original seasons of Arrested Development, so naturally I found this amusing as well as delicious. (If you haven’t seen it, and love dysfunctional family sitcoms, check out Arrested Development). The lovely has an awesome post with background from the show about the bites as well! As she suggested, MAKE SURE you freeze your banana slices for 2 hours before dipping in the chocolate. If you don’t – a mess ensues and it’s much more work than needed. These came out delicious and were exactly what I needed!
